Man faces three month jail sentence for taking a chance and driving while disqualified

A MAN who “took a chance” and drove while disqualified is facing a three month jail sentence, Blanchardstown District Court has heard.
Judge David McHugh gave Anthony Crilly the choice of starting his sentence before or after Christmas. Crilly chose the latter.
Crilly, aged 34, with an address at Park Dale, Grange Rath, County Meath, pleaded guilty to having no insurance at the N4 Lucan on October 13, 2017. Garda Noel McKeown told Judge McHugh that at 7.45 on October 13 last, he stopped a car on the N4 in relation to its lights.
He said that Crilly made admissions at the scene in relation to insurance.
Garda McKeown said Crilly had seven previous convictions including five for road traffic offences.
At District Court 46 on January 18, 2016, he had received a two-year disqualification for no insurance and a €200 fine for careless driving.
Garda McKeown said Crilly had also received a three-year ban for drunken driving.
Crilly’s solicitor, John O’Doherty, said his client had pleaded guilty at the earliest possible opportunity. He said Crilly lives near Drogheda and had got a new job.
Mr O’Doherty said that on the day in question he had been asked to drive a colleague from Drogheda to Leixlip and he “took a chance”.
Judge McHugh said he would impose a four-year disqualification and a three month jail sentence. He told Crilly he would give him the choice of affirming his order now or remanding him to January 11 next to be sentenced.
Crilly chose the latter and was remanded to that date.
