Gardai investigate after hatchet-wielding raiders rob local shop

GARDAI are investigating after two men armed with a hatchet held up a shop in the Castletymon Shopping Centre last night, fleeing the scene with an undisclosed sum of money.

At around 9.30pm last night (Friday, January 5) two men entered the Centra store in the shopping centre and threatened staff with a hatchet.

This is the third armed raid on a Tallaght business in the first five days of 2018, after the Speaker Conolly Pub in Firhouse was raided on New Year’s Day and Meaghers Pharmacy in Glenview on January 2.

In a statement to Echo.ie today, a Garda spokesperson confirmed that no arrests have yet been made in relation to yesterday’s robbery at the Castletymon Shopping Centre.

However, gardai confirmed that the hatchet has since been recovered.

 According to the Garda spokesperson:“Gardai in Tallaght are investigating a robbery that occurred at Castletymon Shopping Centre on Friday evening,  January 5, 2018 at approximately 9.30pm.

“Two men entered the shop in possession of a hatchet and took a sum of money from the cash till. 

“No persons were injured during the incident and the matter is under investigation. 

“The hatchet has since been recovered.”
