Man on 54 rape and sexual assault charges

A CLONDALKIN man has appeared in court charged with raping and sexually assaulting a female over a 16-year time period.

The alleged offences occurred at his home, at a location in Co Wexford and in locations in Spain and Portugal.

The man, aged 60, who has an address in Clondalkin, and who cannot be identified for legal reasons, is charged with 54 counts of rape and sexual assault of a named female at his home address, at a location in Co Wexford and at locations in the Costa Del Sol and the Algarve on dates between January 1990 and December 2006.

Garda Katie Flood told Judge David McHugh in Blanchardstown District Court that she arrested the man at his home that morning and he was later charged with the 54 charges at Clondalkin Garda Station.

She said he had replied “that is definitely not true, it never happened” to one of the charges and “never absolutely never” to another of the charges.

Garda Flood said the man made no reply to the remaining 52 charges.

She said the DPP had directed trial on indictment.

Garda Flood said she would consent to bail on condition that the man reside at his home address, that he sign on three times a week at his local garda station, that he has no contact directly or indirectly with the alleged injured party and that he hand over his passport and undertake not to apply for another one.

Judge McHugh released the man on bail and remanded him to appear before the court in January for service of his book of evidence.
