He was remanded on continuing bail and sentencing was deferred after Judge Gerard Jones asked for more information about the incident.

Nugent, with an address at James Connolly Park in Clondalkin pleaded guilty at Blanchardstown District Court to producing a knife and attempting to rob a man at James Connolly Park on August 17, 2020.

The charges are contrary to the Theft and Fraud and Firearms and Offensive Weapons Acts.

Sergeant Maria Callaghan said gardai went to James Connolly Park following a report that Nugent had attempted to take a ladder from the victim. He had produced a kitchen knife and pointed it at the man and a witness who was present at the time, the court heard.

Sgt Callaghan said both were put in fear and the knife was discarded, but Nugent followed them back to a house in the estate and “again confronted both parties” before being restrained until the gardai arrived.

The court heard the builder had been working in the housing estate, doing some roofing. Both he and the other person were adults, Sgt Callaghan confirmed.

The DPP consented to the case being dealt with summarily in the district court on a plea of guilty only, subject to jurisdiction being accepted by the judge. Nugent was pleading guilty, his solicitor Sanrda Frayne said.

The court heard statements had been made in the case.

Judge Jones accepted jurisdiction but said he wanted to hear more from the prosecuting garda about “what was going on” in relation to the offences.

He adjourned the case to a date next month and said he was noting the accused’s guilty plea.
