PROPERTY group Marlet is advancing plans for more than 1,100 apartments on the Belgard Road.

Headed by Patrick Crean, the company is in pre-planning talks with South Dublin County Council and An Bord Pleanála for a new urban quarter.

Last year, Marlet acquired a prime 16-acre site off the Belgard Road for a reported €16 million.

The site previously housed a number of individual warehouse units for Cuisine de France, Uniphar and Kerry Group.

A number of individual sites were assembled into one land package, which is believed to stretch back to the Belgard Retail Park.

Marlet is proposing to build 12 apartment blocks of up to 10 storeys in a development called Belgard Gardens.

The development would also include shops, restaurants, a public plaza, creche and live-work units.

Backed by UK-based M&G Investments, the property group is expected to lodge a planning application in the near future under the strategic housing development scheme, which allows builders to apply directly to An Bord Pleanála for a fast-track decision on large housing projects.

If given the go ahead, it would be one of the largest single residential and commercial developments in the country.

The company has acquired close to 50 sites for residential and commercial developments.
