Match of the Week: Crumlin and Bluebell share the spoils

In a riveting clash between Crumlin United and Bluebell FC, the Armagh Road in Crumlin bore witness to a rollercoaster encounter as the two sides battled it out in a 2-2 Leinster Senior Sunday League game reports Rory Merriman.

From the outset, Crumlin United, playing on their home turf, demonstrated their intent with a lightning-fast goal just shy of two minutes into the game.

Alan McGreal’s precision through ball found the waiting feet of Jake Walker, who made no mistake in slotting it past the Bluebell goalkeeper.

Walker, once the league’s top scorer before an injury setback, proved his mettle once again with his clinical finish, signaling his return to form.

However, the game took a turn when the referee controversially denied Crumlin a penalty, only to award one to Bluebell shortly thereafter.

Joshua Ojelabi capitalized on the opportunity, leveling the scoreline at 1-1.

Moments before the halftime whistle, Bluebell found themselves reduced to ten men following a reckless challenge that warranted a red card.

Despite Crumlin’s dominance in the second half, Bluebell managed to capitalize on a defensive lapse, with Jack Savage unleashing a spectacular long-range strike that left goalkeeper Cian Clarke stranded.

Bluebell’s hopes were momentarily lifted before another player saw red, leaving them with only nine men on the field.

With the odds seemingly stacked against them, Crumlin pressed forward, buoyed by the numerical advantage.

Their perseverance paid off in the dying moments of the game when 17-year-old Callum Bridgeman rose to the occasion, nodding in an equalizer from a pinpoint cross delivered by Zach Donoghue.

The final whistle blew with the scoreboard reading 2-2, as both teams shared the spoils in a hard-fought battle.

Despite Crumlin’s disappointment at not securing a victory on home soil, the late heroics of Brideman salvaged a point and showcased the resilience of the team in the face of adversity.

“It’s always harder playing against 10 men” Crumlin manager James Lee told The Echo newspaper.

“We were cagey in the first half, but Bluebell will always be a team who play with blood and guts so it’s always a good contest.

“It’s a good result considering the ongoing changes within the team.

“They’re a young group still gelling together, especially with players returning from injury like Jake Walker and Alan McGreal,” Lee said.

“We’ll take the point and focus on the next one,” he concluded.
