Match of the Week: Glenmalure keep up the pace

GLENMALURE Rovers kept up their pursuit of Glasnaion FC, in the UCFL Division 3 section on Saturday, with a deserved 3-1 away win over D24 United in Sean Walsh Astro reports John Mooney.

This game was as good as over by half time when Rovers built up a 3-0 lead, and a deserved one at that, but credit to United who, despite struggling this season, battled on gamely.

Now I know Rovers took their foot off the gas after the restart, but United finally got a bit of rhythm and at least got on the scoresheet.

Rovers opened their account in the 10th minute as James Wall freed Ciaran Collins down the right, he cut inside the area and, with no one around for support, smashed home from a tight angle for his 20th goal of the season.

Collins should have doubled that two minutes later, but keeper Ignat Andrei denied him with a good save.

Both Karl Brackett and Joshua Adeyemi both had half chances to level the game for United, before the visitors doubled their lead with a neat diving header from Eoin Leonard.

While on 30 minutes this game was over as a contest with a brilliant solo effort from Wall, after he won the ball off a defender and crashed home a beauty.

It was a really good opening half for the visitors but the second was anything but a classic, as the leaders took their foot off the gas and, really, it looked like a training session.

However, United didn’t think that way and chased and harried at every opportunity, and their hard work paid dividends as Brackett played in Adeyemi to reduce the deficit.

The visitors then survived a scare when Denzel Nwakfor smashed a shot off the crossbar minutes later, but despite their best effort they were never going to reel in a Rovers side that are chasing five trophies at this stage of the season.
