Match of the Week: Oldbury topple Kiltalown in first win

OLDBURY FC gained their first win of the season when they made the short trip to Jobstown Park to face Kiltalown FC, in this UCFL Division 3 encounter, and ran out 4-1 winners, reports John Mooney.

This in unknown territory for the Bury as usually they start really well but, for one reason or another, they have had to wait until their fifth game to record their first win, so they will be hoping that trend continues.

Saturday saw them put in a decent shift and they did deserve the points, but Kiltalown gave them something to think about when they pulled a goal back before half time to trail 1-2.

The visitors couldn’t have gotten off to a better start as they were a goal to the good inside the opening minute through Tiernan O’Hanlon, after he chased a Daniel Barnwell ball, rounded keeper Derek Hewitt, and slotted home.

They should have doubled that lead well before they netted their second but Hewitt denied Keith Foley twice, before Foley finally slotted home a blocked O’Hanlon effort to make it 2-0 on 28 minutes.

But for all the Bury’s dominance, it was the home side who scored next, 10 minutes later, and it was Daniel Howe who was on the mark.

It rattled the leaders for a time and, to be honest, with the wind blowing at their back and playing down the hill on the pitch I thought the Bury would run riot.

The thing is they didn’t and it was a penalty they were awarded when Ross Hand was taken down, and Barnwell stuck away, that finally broke any resistance the home side had.

That was plain to see minutes later when Ciaran Patten, Keith Flynn and Dylan Farrell combined to set up Jack Lawlor for their fourth.

It meant that the home side are still searching for their first win of the campaign having registered one point from their four starts, and unless they turn that around quick a bleak season will lie ahead.
