Monica McGill: Time to make the most of our past and enrich our future

January starts the new year, hopefully with feelings of fresh beginnings and positive intentions bolstered by the good will of Christmas.

The month of January gets its name from the ancient Roman god Janus. He is usually depicted in antiquity as the deity with two faces – the older face contemplating the old year just gone, and the younger one anticipating the new one ahead.
