More CCTV cameras to protect the elderly

CCTV cameras to deter muggings in the Esker Lane and Cherbury Park area, are being considered by South Dublin County Council.
Earlier this month, The Echo reported how a spate of muggings targeting elderly people in the area led to increased garda patrols.
One 82-year-old pensioner was mugged twice in the space of a week, and gardaí advised residents to be “vigilant.”
In response to a motion by Fianna Fáil Councillor Ed O’Brien calling for improved security at the Lucan ACM on Tuesday, South Dublin County Council reported a number of measures.
This includes CCTV, with a council spokesperson saying the cameras “should assist to address any anti-social/criminal behaviour that may be occurring in the area.”
“The request to provide CCTV will be considered on foot of further details regarding the type of activities taking place at the bridge,” said the spokesperson.
Cllr O’Brien also asked management to cut back hedgerows/bushes and increase public lighting to “protect residents using the footbridge over the N4 between Esker Lane and Cherbury Park in light of recent criminal activity.”
In response the council said that works have commenced to cut back vegetation at the location, and a review will take place on existing lighting columns on either side of the bridge.
A council spokesperson said they “liaise regularly with An Garda Síochána in relation to specific issues” and encouraged residents to report “any criminal activities they may encounter” to gardaí.
