More than 1.2m social welfare recipients to receive Christmas Bonus

MORE than 1.2 million social welfare recipients will receive the Christmas bonus payment, which starts today.

According to the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection, a total of €2.9m in payments will be made to pensioners, people with disabilities, carers, lone parents, long-term unemployed and many others recipients.

Confirming the payments, which starts today, the Minister for Employment Affairs and Social Protection, Regina Doherty, said: “I am very pleased that the Christmas Bonus is being paid again this year.

“Not only is it a welcome additional support for social welfare customers in the run-up to Christmas, in many cases the money is spent locally and provides a real boost for local economies.”

The bonus is paid at the rate of 85 per cent of a person’s normal weekly payment to more than 630,000 pensioners and 580,000 other social welfare recipients.

According to figures provided by the Department, some of the payments include; a one parent family with four children will receive €265.40, a single person on Jobseeker’s Allowance will receive €164.10, a person on the Carer’s allowance with two children is set to receive €228.40 and a single pensioner, who is in receipt of the Non-Contributory State Pension, will receive €193.00.
