Mother raises €3,400 to obtain defibrillators

By Maurice Garvey

THE parent of a young boy with a critical congenital heart defect secured funding for life-saving equipment at his pre-school in St Michael’s, Ballyfermot. Lindsey Best Kinsella, from Palmerstown Woods, raised €3,400 for defibrillators through a variety of fundraising efforts, including cake sales, bag-packing, and support from family, friends and local businesses.

Her son Tristan Best Kinsella (4), has Hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) – meaning the heart never developed in the womb, and the right side of the heart does all the work.

The rare condition means young Tristan has already undergone three major operations, is on daily medication for the rest of his life, and will have to go to London for heart and lung transplant surgery at a future date.

Whilst doing CPR training last year, Lindsey discovered defibrillators were vital in case Tristan or another kid required them.

The equipment can vary in price, depending on features, with an approximate cost of €1,400.

“We have got great support from businesses, family and friends in Ballyfermot, and I would like to give them a big heartfelt thanks,” said Lindsey, who celebrated the delivery of the equipment at St Michael’s this week with Tristan and daughter Keelin (8).

Lindsey secured funds for two defibrillators – one at pre-school and one for the family home.
