A LOCAL councillor has had his motion to scrap bin charges passed at this month’s meeting of South Dublin County Council.

Councillor Mark Ward had proposed “That this Council writes to the Minister for Communications, Climate Change and Natural Resources asking him to scrap the new pay per weight bin charges in light of the increased charges being forced onto customers”

Cllr Ward told The Echo that he was delighted that the motion was passed.

He added: “There was some opposition to the motion, most notably from the Fine Gael councillors in the chamber. The people of South Dublin County Council had their voice heard.

“They are sick to the back teeth of what they see as just another stealth tax on the most vulnerable. The behaviour of some waste management companies since the recent intervention by the Government left a lot to be desired.”

Cllr Ward said that he and his party colleagues in Sinn Féin called for the return of the waste management to the control of the state and local councils.

He said: “The behaviour of the private waste management companies in trying to extract as much money as possible from their customers, left us no choice. The people want bin charges ended . . . not suspended.”
