Gardai believe the father-of-three from Glenshane Estate was deliberately run over following a suspected dispute.

They are trying to establish the circumstances that brought four men to the estate, and which direction the attackers fled towards Crumlin after the brutal murder.

Mr Lynch was walking in the area when he became involved in a verbal row with up to four men in a silver Ford Focus car.

The incident escalated, Mr Lynch was run over, and the four men abandoned the scene in the red Polo.

A passer-by is understood to have tried to run to his aid and attempted to stop one of the attackers from escaping.

Superintendent Peter Duff, from Tallaght Garda Station said the victim was not involved in criminality.

He said gardai were trying to establish the movements of the four men, and what manner they arrived and left the scene.

The Ford Focus remained at the scene after the attack, and was subsequently taken away by gardai for investigation.

The red Polo found in the Crumlin area has also been taken away by gardai.

Gardai are examining CCTV footage of the area.

A post-mortem is currently being conducted to ascertain the nature of the injuries sustained by the victim.

An incident room has been opened in Tallaght Garda Station.

Supt Duff appealed for any witnesses to come forward.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Tallaght Garda Station  666 6000,  the Garda Confidential Line  1800 666 111  or any Garda Station.
