Music Academy are giving a lucky teen free voice or instrument lessons

HIGHLY commended Terenure musical organisation Mezzo Music Academy, is starting the year with a kind gesture – the opportunity for a teenager to avail of a full academic year of private tuition.

Mezzo Music Academy was established by Sonya Murphy-Lyons in 2011, who was inspired to run the initiative after reading articles in The Echo about community goodwill endeavors, including that of Sarah Nataro (27), from Brookview in Tallaght, who before Christmas, secured donations of selection boxes from friends, family and local businesses, to give to children.

“We are delighted to give away an academic year (30 weeks) of private instrument or voice lessons to a deserving winner,” said Sonya.

“We all know that listening to music can reduce anxiety, blood pressure, and pain. But playing music promotes achievement and improves your confidence and self-esteem and most importantly, it’s fun.”

The offer is targeted towards 12 – 17 year olds who may struggle with confidence issues, and who have always wanted to learn an instrument but could not due to financial or other reasons.

“We would ask teens to send us a video recording of themselves, telling us why they deserve to win this prize,” said Sonya.

“What style of music inspires you most?  Why you want to learn an instrument? What do you hope to gain from the experience?

Mezzo Music pivoted during the pandemic to launch online lessons and programmes, and have been nominated as finalists for the SFA National Small Business Awards 2021.

The popular Greenlea Road academy, which caters for infants up to adults, also received a highly commended accolade at the SFA National Small Business Awards 2018 – in the outstanding small business category.

Teens can send Mezzo Music a video stating why they deserve to win.

Videos of no more than 40 seconds in length are to be sent to info@mezzomusicacademy or WhatsApp Sonya at 087 817 0666.

“We will choose four finalists and then ask our social media followers to vote on who they think is the most deserving of the prize,” she said.

Participants are urged to note that they must be comfortable with their video being shown on Mezzo’s social media channels.

Closing date for entries is Friday, February 5, and the winner must be available to start lessons week commencing February 8, 2021.

“The winner can take their lessons online while we are in level 5 restrictions, but will also have the option of taking face to face lessons when we are permitted to open the school again,” said Sonya.
