Mystery as four provinces flag is cable‑tied to The Node on N81 roundabout

The N81 roundabout has been adorned with a flag that has been cable-tied to the sculpture in the centre.

A four provinces flag has been tied to one of the poles of the structure, dubbed ‘The Node’ following its completion last year.

The white coloured pole is the home for this flag, and the positioning of the flag allows it to billow out with the wind in a way that the design is clearly visible.

The four provinces flag includes the arms of each province in quarters that make up the full design.

Top right of the flag, Munster consists of three gold crowns on a blue background, bottom right is Connacht, which is a combination that sees one half display a black eagle and another show a hand brandishing a sword, the top left section has the red hand of Ulster within a white shield and that atop a red cross with a gold background, while bottom left is Leinster’s, a gold harp on green.

It is unclear why this flag has been fixed on The Node – recent high-profile flag installations in the area opted for the tricolour.

South Dublin County Council has been contacted for comment.
