New contemporary image in the pipeline for Nutgrove Centre
By Brendan Grehan
NUTGROVE Shopping Centre in Rathfarnham is planning further refurbishment. After broadening the appeal of the 30-year-old centre by signing up two new brands, Carraig Donn and Tiger, Davy Real Estate has lodged a planning application with South Dublin City Council.
The application proposes a new contemporary image for the centre where the malls have been improved in recent years.
Glazed illuminated double-height lobbies are to be added to both entrances to act as focal points for customers.
The dated but visually dominant aluminium canopy is to be removed and replaced by a contemporary high quality stone surround, along with a render and brick finish.
Under the application, there are also plans to upgrade the landscaping and paved areas in front of the shopping centre. The centre recorded a four per cent increase in footfall in 2015.
All the Davy-owned shops within the 20,252sq.m. centre – it has a 60 per cent stake – are fully occupied and some of the multiple traders are anxious to expand their units.
The centre is strongly anchored by Penneys, Dunnes Stores and Tesco. There is considerable confidence that the upgrading will help to reposition the centre and attract additional footfall.
Nutgrove was opened in October 1984. The site for the shopping centre was located on part of the old Lamb’s Jam orchards.
With nearly 1,000 free surface car-parking spaces, 70 shops and offices and restaurants, it is one of the main players on the Dublin shopping centre market.
