New €13 million ‘Lucan Leisure Complex’ to open in May 2022 following long delays

THE NEW swimming pool and leisure centre in Lucan is set to open in May 2022, after being delayed significantly by Covid-19 restrictions.

In a recent report, South Dublin County Council confirmed that the swimming pool, which has been under construction since 2019, has an expected completion date in May 2022.

The €13 million ‘Lucan Leisure Campus’ will feature a state-of-the-art swimming pool and fitness centre which will operate in conjunction with the existing leisure centre.

The existing leisure centre, which is located adjacent to the new campus, has been closed since August 2021 to facilitate urgent structural works and will be re-opened under joint management.

As previously reported in The Echo, questions and concerns from local councillors have been raised regarding the future management of the facility.

At a recent council meeting, South Dublin County Council said that the process to select a “competent and appropriate entity” to manage and maintain the facility will be conducted through a negotiated procedure in accordance with public procurement requirements for concessions contracts.

With the relevant tender documents being used in the coming weeks, the local authority added that the tender will stipulate the requirement to operate a commercially viable facility by having “pay as you go” single use options to ensure that community and sports groups as well as local schools are accommodated.
