New Hope and joy
By Aideen O'Flaherty
A FAITH-BASED residential drug rehabilitation centre in Kiltalown held a well-attended open day on Saturday, where relatives of the residents and members of the community got to have fun and get some insight into the work of the New Hope Rehabilitation Centre.
The rehab centre, which is based in the grounds of the old Hazel Grove golf course, has been in operation since 2007 and supports men with addiction issues on the road to recovery, from detoxing through to supported housing in the community, with the charity having 25 clients in total.

Over 100 people attended the open day, where there were bouncy castles, face-painters and an ice cream van, with the yearly event allowing people to have fun and see the work of New Hope.
Layton Kelly, the manager of New Hope, told The Echo: “We have the open day so we can open the centre up for people who want to visit, who want to see what we do, and meet the staff and residents.
“It also gives the residents, who have been caught up in addiction, a fun day out with their kids and families.”
The centre has a total of 25 clients at any one time, with 16 of them living in the centre in Kiltalown as part of the first phase of the rehabilitation programme, and nine of them living in the community in the second phase of the 12-month programme.

The aim of the programme is to get clients to address their addiction issues and to go on to engage in education or employment, to have their housing needs addressed, and to be fully integrated and functioning in their local community.
Mr Kelly added: “The clients get the opportunity to come in here to get drug-free, to find themselves and rebuild their lives.

“There’s great reward in seeing someone with a broken life being helped, when you can see the hope coming back into their lives and when they can start to see the possibilities.”
