Doyle was given a taste of the role towards the end of the 2020-21 season and will now also remain on as a player while also carrying out his backroom team roles.

Doyle told the clubs website today: “Obviously last two months of the season I was there and I was focused on playing football, but things will take a change now for me now with my new role.  I’m looking forward to it.

“I’m still going to register as a player. I’m there for the lads and the manager if he needs me.

Michael, who is 39-years-old went on to say, ‘No player wants to retire. I still feel I can play, I want to play as long as I can, I coming up to 40, it’s the next chapter in my life in a sense. It’s been made a bit easier registered as a player cause it’s a big thing.

“Now I can focus on football, focus on players in the club and also help move the club forward.

“It’s something I have been thinking about. The manager has given me an opportunity and when he asked me to step up to assistant it was one I could not turn down, it’s a great opportunity.

“It’s a great club and I have enjoyed my time here. There has been some tough times, getting relegated out of the Football League, but my ideal thing was to get the club back into the Football League as a player but unfortunately we came up short. It’s a brilliant club and I hope to play my part going forward”.
