A LOCAL secondary school’s hard work has paid off as they have been awarded their ninth green flag.

With an impressive eight green flags under their belt, the Green School Committee in Coláiste Bride Secondary School in Clondalkin worked hard over the past two years to achieve their ninth and finally received the good news last Thursday, May 27.

Teacher and one of the green school co-ordinators, Nikita O’Reilly said that the focus was on global citizenship and travel.

“To get the flag we had to set up our committee and put in place our action plan. We started working toward this in September 2019, so it meant that over the past two years, that we were working on this, we had school closures due to Covid-19 so our action plan had to be changed and changed again.”

Nikita says that one of the things the committee set out to do was encourage more students to walk and cycle to school – creating a map with routes and times it takes to walk and cycle from different areas near the school.

The committee also focused on the reasons that were preventing the students from cycling to school – allowing the girls to wear PE tracksuits if they were cycling in.

Due to school closures and restrictions ongoing throughout the last year and a half, Nikita says that the committee were tasked with coming up with alternative plans and events that would be permitted.

“We were going to have an action day in February, but school was actually closed when we were supposed to have it, so we put it all online and had an action week.

“Everyday there was a different activity to do such as a PowerPoint, a video or a quiz so we were still getting the information out there,” Nikita told The Echo.

The green flag is expected to go up at the school when the new school year starts in September.
