October Sports Star of the Month – Niamh Coyne

TALLAGHT and National Centre swimmer Niamh Coyne recorded her biggest feat to date when she won silver in the 100m Breaststroke at the Youth Olympic Games in Argentina.

She progressed easily from the heats to the semi-final in fourth overall with a time of 1:09.49 and a fantastic swim there saw her lower that to 1:08.90 to finish runner-up in race and third overall.

That subsequently saw her secure a place in the final in which she clocked the exact same time to take second spot on the podium.

Her compatriot Mona McSharry finished in fourth place in the race, just .02 of a second outside of the medals.

Coyne’s superb feat followed hot on the heels of her fifth place finish in the 50m Breaststroke Final.

The Tallaght swimmer will now be turning her attention to next month’s World Short Course Championship in China where fellow Tallaght swimmer Brendan Hyland will also be in action.

The youngest member of that squad, she will ultimately be targeting qualification for next summer’s World Championships when she lines out in the Irish Open in April.
