Old Bawn shield delight

TWO VERY evenly matched sides met in this UCFL Division 3B Shield final in VEC last Saturday and, really, it was a pity that one had to go home empty handed.

With Old Bawn and Phibsboro Club de Futbol tied at 1-1, and no extra time, this went straight to a penalty shootout, where the Bawn prevailed on a 5-4 scoreline.

Old Bawn can make it a double winning season as they still have the league title in their sights, and to think that this side only just made it to the first game of the season this has been a huge achievement.

This game was played at a frightening pace, despite the warm weather, with no let up throughout, and the only thing missing was goals.

That’s mainly down to both defences who stood firm, and each attack was closed out before it could really cause problems.

It was looking like ending in a goalless draw until nine minutes from time, when the Bawn broke the deadlock.

Kyle Cody set up the chance as he finally broke clear of the lock and chain he was under for most of the game, and slipped the ball beyond the advancing Chris Quinn, but the ball hit the upright and Aaron Breslin bundled the ball home while under pressure from a defender.

It looked like it was enough but there was a twist in the tail as Phibsboro snatched a cracking equaliser, with only three minutes remaining, when Cormac Goulding slotted from the edge of the area after Sean Quinn slipped the ball to him, to set up a shoot out.

However, Phibsboro missed their first spot kick and it gave the Bawn the incentive to go on to win with Jordan Keating, Keith Nevill, Aaron Layton, Lewis Talbot and Ross Geragthy all being successful from the spot.
