Oldbury are too good in league

OLDBURY FC opened up a five point lead at the top of the UCFL Division 3A section, when they entertained Tamhlacht FC in Sean Walsh Park Astro and ran out 3-0 winners on Saturday morning reports John Mooney.

ROC Celtic are their nearest rivals at this stage, they are in second place with two games in hand, but it’s points on the board that matter and the Bury have them in the bag.

Saturday’s game saw Tamhlacht give a good account of themselves, but they just couldn’t find the net and their missed chances cost them.

Jamie Smullen, Jason Byrne and Nathan Flynn all had chances to score throughout this tie but, for one reason or another, they left their shooting boots at home.

No such problems for Oldbury who, after securing a 2-0 lead at the break, were never really going to throw it all away as they put even more light between themselves and Tamhlacht, who lie in third position but have played three more games than the home side.

Tiernan O’Hanlon set them on their way after 15 minutes play when the visitors failed to deal with a straight-forward free kick into the area, Niall O’Byrne gathered and laid it off to O’Hanlon to finish. 3

That lead was doubled on 35 minutes and it all came from a Tamhlacht free kick, when a quick counter attack saw O’Hanlon turn provider when he set up the reliable Andy Nowlan to make it 2-0.

It was going to be an uphill battle for the visitors in the second half and Oldbury made them work hard for everything, but as stated earlier the shooting boots were nowhere to be found and the game was killed as a spectacle on 65 minutes with a screamer.

Dan Barnwell picked up a loose ball in the middle of the park and slipped it to Leigh Callery, he steadied himself and smashed home to the top corner of the net, from all of 35 yards.

It was a fitting way to finish off the scoring but unfortunately for both teams players suffered bad injuries, Oldbury’s Sean Molloy had to taken away in an ambulance with a bad shin injury, while Tamlacht lost Byrne with a popped shoulder
