On This Day in 1981: Ballyfermot gets a new library with a difference

On this day in 1981 the biggest library in the country at the time opened in Ballyfermot.

The multipurpose building was state-of-the-art, and was much more than just a library, with community meeting rooms, a children’s area and much more.

Speaking at the opening of the library, Chief City and County Librarian, Maureen O’Byrne said: “This is designed very specially with the needs of Ballyfermot in mind.

“It is designed to give space to allow people to breathe and to expand to give them a place where they can come to relax.”

The building cost £650,000, and also featured much more than books, with audio cassettes and re-productions of well-known paintings on show.
