On This Day in 1987: Dubliners on what Lent means and what they plan to give up

Today is the beginning of Lent and many of us will have already decided what we plan to give up, but what were Dubliners in 1987 planning to axe for Lent?

Via the RTE Archives (which we are big fans of), we bring you some great footage of Shay Healy speaking with the people of Dublin about what Lent means, what they plan to give up, and why they think it is important.

On This Day 1987 what are you giving up collage

When asked what Lent is all about, one young woman said it’s about “eating pancakes and getting your forehead all black”, while another woman said she will be giving up men “to keep me ma quiet”.

As for why they were giving something up, one young man said, “for the sacrifice because God died willingly for us so we owe him something back”.

Are you giving up something for Lent this year?
