On this day in 1987: St Aidan’s Park halting site in Tallaght

After much confrontation in the Tallaght area during the mid 1980s between residence and members of the travelling community, the St Aidan’s Park halting site opened in May 1986.

Hosting 10 families, the site offered those who moved in clean living conditions, electricity, clean running water and a safe place to raise their families.

On this day in 1987 RTE visited the site to speak to those living there, while they also spoke with residence in the Brookfield housing estate to get their take on the newly built facility.

The broadcast also features footage from the stand-off on the Tallaght bypass, with members of the travelling community protesting over their right to somewhere safe and clean to live.
