Ormond to fight Stateside
By Stephen Leonard
STEPHEN Ormond is confident he’ll have another title in the bag by year’s end.
The highly-rated lightweight from Clondalkin is expecting to be making a return to the United States to box sometime in October and is hopeful that the fight there will open the door to another title shot.
Ormond was last out in competitive action in July when he beat Poland’s Jacek Wylezol in the National Stadium to take his pro record to 18 wins and just two defeats, one of which came against Terry Flanagan in their World title eliminator back in February.
That loss also cost Ormond his WBO Euro-pean Lightweight belt, but the Dubliner is looking forward to fighting Stateside for the first time since he beat Andrew Costa in Tennessee in 2009.
“I’ve fought there [the US] a few times early on in my career and I feel that my style is suited for there” Ormond told The Echo.
“Training has been going great. I haven’t been out of the gym for the past six weeks and I’ll start to step it up six weeks before the fight. I’ve always been up there, but one thing or another has gone against me.
“But I’ll be going over there and training with Ken Casey in Murphy’s Gym. By the end of the year I’ll have a title” he insisted.
