Over 150 houses for older people on track for delivery

OVER 150 houses for older people are expected to be delivered by South Dublin County Council next year.

In an update provided at a recent council meeting in response to a question by Cllr Francis Timmons, the council said the 12 houses at Brady’s Field in Old Bawn are expected to be completed in 2023.

A total of 131 houses for older people in Fernwood, Maplewood and Whitestown Way – all in Tallaght – are also expected to be complete next year, as are ten in Templeogue village.

Further down the line, 31 houses at St Aonghus’ Green, Pearse Brothers’ Park and St Ronan’s Crescent are due to be delivered in 2024.

In the more immediate future, 93 houses in St Mark’s and Sallymills, Clondalkin, are to be completed next month.

“In addition, potential additional age-friendly homes are being explored for delivery in Citywest, Rathcoole, Lucan, Bawnogue, Walkinstown and Tallaght under the HDAP including in AHB and private developments,” stated the council.

The housing projects are part of the council’s Rightsizing Policy, which was approved by councillors in December 2020.

The policy provides for the allocation of age-friendly homes to people aged 55 or older through the housing list.

This includes homeless, medical priority or HAP transfers, transfers by existing council tenants or the community list which contains private homeowners.

Up to 10 per cent of homes in new age-friendly housing developments will, at first allocation, be made available to applicants from the community list, stated the council.

“Our 2020 County Age Friendly County Strategy highlighted local demographic and under-occupancy challenges following a significant census-on-census increase in the number and age profile of older people,” it stated.

“Over 11 per cent of our three- and four-bedroom social homes are occupied solely by just one or two older people.

“Our Age Friendly Healthy Homes Co-ordinator engages on a case-by-case basis with older person households to discuss right-sizing and other housing and healthcare supports.”
