Parade brings together celebration of diversity and community spirit

THE first St Patrick’s Day parade in Cherry Orchard for many years was a resounding success with a great turnout.

The decision by Cherry Orchard Community Services to host a St Patrick’s Day parade, was a welcome one for residents, and it brought together a celebration of diversity, strength and community sprit.

Fr Michael Murtagh, parish priest Cherry Orchard said: “Many thanks to all the local community groups and activities who have made this possible.

“It was an excellent day. The weather was a bit cloudy in the morning but it held up. All the people who turned up to watch or take part had a great time and got to show off.

“There was Irish music, local groups, little tots even, and a multitude of children, who are the future of this community.”

Work behind the scene for the parade was carried out by St Ultan’s campus, Community Creches, Babes in the Wood and Cherry Orchard Creche, Cherry Orchard Integrated Youth Services, Blue Door (BSII), Dublin City Council, Most Holy Sacrament Parish Church, Cherry Orchard Community Centre, Cherry Orchard Boxing Club, Twirlers Dance Troupe and Cherry Orchard Running Club.

The parade started from Cherry Orchard Integrated Youth Services, Equine Centre, and moved down through Cherry Orchard Avenue.

RTE cameras were also in attendance to capture the festivities – a segment of the parade appearing on the national broadcaster later on that day.
