Peamount set to launch league title defence in June

PEAMOUNT United are poised to get the defence of their National League campaign underway in late June.

The league programme was pushed back from its original start date in mid March to the weekending June 28 and will run right through until December 13.

Peamount United will launch the defence of their Women’s National League title in June

The fact that the original programme was punctuated by big gaps in April and June  permitted a resched-uling of the programme in its entirety within the calendar year.

And with the nine teams in this season’s competition facing each other just twice, it means that the league itself requires only 16 weeks to run its course.

Peamount will still kick off their title defence with a trip to Cork City before then welcoming Bohemians to Newcastle followed by another game on the road against Athlone Town.

Regarding the decision to push the league back, an FAI statement read “The 2020 season will now commence a week after the scheduled return of the SSE Airticity League, and the Women’s National League will finish on the weekend ending December 13.

“The league will be played over two rounds of fixtures, 16 games per team, with the FAI Women’s Cup to run in tandem with the league season.

The League Cup will be deferred for this season.

“The decision was taken in the light of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic and the FAI remains committed to all guidelines issued by the Government and the Department of Health.”
