Peamount United lift FAI U18 Cup
PEAMOUNT United’s Under 18 women’s team completed the first part in a possible quadruple this season after they beat Cregmore Claregalway 6-2 to raise the WFAI Under 18 Cup at Eamon Deacy Park on Sunday.
After shipping a goal after 10 minutes when their opponents were awarded a much-disputed penalty, the Newcastle side hit back just two minutes later in spectacular fashion.
Aoife Brophy played the ball in from the right for Aisling Spillane who caught the pass perfectly on the move, sending it to the back of the net from some 25 yards out just two minutes after they fell behind.
And they took the lead 15 minutes on when Doireann Fahey’s corner kick curled its way in.
Pea-mount were awarded a spotkick themselves early in the second half after Gillian Keenan had been upended in the box and Shauna Martin did the honours from the spot in the most composed manner.
Carla McManus, one of the team’s five Under 17 Irish internationals, made it 4-1 seven minutes later after she was played in by Fahey and proceeded to outpace two defenders before tucking the ball away in the far corner, leaving the Cregmore goalkeeper with no chance.
Peamount did suffer a setback with the loss of Michaela Fox-Walsh to injury after she had been introduced only 15 minutes beforehand.
Yet they continued to chalk up the scores with Nicky Plunkett producing the most sublime back-heel to the target after great work and delivery in from the right by Robyn McEvoy.
Louise Masterson was rewarded for her sheer work rate when she fired home Peamount’s sixth and final goal deep into injury time after capitalising on a great ball over the top by Aisling Spillane who was in brilliant form in this decider.
Unbeaten in the Under 18 League, this Peamount side are also into the final of the MGL Senior Cup in which they will play Kentstown while they will take on Home Farm for the Charlie Cahill Cup prize.
