Photo stories exhibition at four local newsagents

AN EXHIBITION of photo stories which will be on display in four local newsagents in West Tallaght, will be launched this Saturday, February 26 at midday at Noel’s Shop in Jobstown.

Noel’s is one of four exhibition sites, with the other three being Leo’s Newsagents in Brookfield, Linda’s Shop in Fortunestown Shopping Centre, and Rossfield Stores.

The exhibition is organised by photographers from femLENS, a volunteer-based nonprofit association that teaches documentary photography to women and girls from diverse cultural and economic backgrounds.

Called ‘Good People Everywhere’, the exhibition features photo boards by four photographers; Paula Haverty, Eva Rico Narvàez, and Jobstown residents Jekaterina Saveljeva and Geraline Conlon.

The photo boards show a variety of stories, including one about shopkeepers in a Spanish town, another about an all-female boxing club in the city centre, and one about a community garden in Balgaddy.

Jekaterina Saveljeva, femsLENS founder and photographer, told The Echo: “The idea is to have people experiencing art without having to change their daily behaviours.

“The exhibition is about showing different communities and challenging stereotypes – the photo boards are inspired by the Jobstown community.

“We picked the newsagents because they’re hubs where local people meet.

“So many people go into these shops, so they’re really great spots to have cultural exhibitions.”

When Ms Saveljeva went to the newsagents with the idea for the exhibition, she said that they were all interested and happy to take part.

Now they’re all looking forward to the launch of the exhibition on Saturday, with the exhibition pieces remaining on display in the shops until March 19.

There will also be free photo zines available in each of the shops, containing a map of all four locations and further information on the pieces in ‘Good People Everywhere’, which is being supported by South Dublin County Council.

Ms Saveljeva added: “I think photography is a really powerful tool for self-reflection and community reflection.”
