Projected Lucan swimming pool costs welcomed by parents and councillors
By Maurice Garvey
PARENTS lobbying for a swimming pool to be introduced in Lucan have welcomed projected costs for the project being included in South Dublin County Council’s three-year capital rolling budget.
Up to €10 million estimated costs were included in the capital rolling budget at the council ACM on Monday.
Independent councillor Paul Gogarty said: “Following on from the €400,000 allocated for the design of the Lucan pool agreed in this year’s budget, I pressed for the CEO to include projections for the overall cost of the pool in the rolling three-year capital programme.
“This was supported by my Independent Community Alliance councillors Liona O’Toole and Guss O’Connell at the time and subsequently also pushed by others.
“This call was initially turned down because the CEO felt that the overall costs had not yet been calculated.
However I made the point that in seeking the proportion of national funding required, it would be helpful for the council to have budgeted for the entire estimated cost of the programme. The CEO has now done so.”
Cllr Liona O’Toole said: “It still doesn’t mean a pool is on the way, but it is yet another positive step. It’s now up to central Government to provide its share of funding.
“Since the last local elections there has been renewed impetus to get the pool project back on track – politicians of all persuasions have been constructive in working towards this end. The item has been kept on the agenda thanks to the work done by Helen and Sandra in the Lucan Swimming Pool campaign.”
