Public encouraged to report illegal dumping in mountain areas

Public encouraged to report illegal dumping in mountain areas

By Mary Dennehy

THIS load of rubbish was dumped in the middle of a road leading into the Glenasmole Valley, with members of the public encouraged to report incidents of illegal dumping in the Dublin mountains.

The pictures were shared with The Echo by a reader who came across the dumped load in the Glenasmole Valley as he travelled from the Military Road (Featherbeds) in the direction of the Bohernabreena reservoir.

When contacted by The Echo this week, South Dublin County Council said that it received two complaints in relation to the dumped material at this location.

Teresa Walsh,  the council’s Director of Environment, Water and Climate Change, said: “The council supports and works with the PURE (protecting Uplands & Rural Environments) Project, which operates the PURE truck and will remove the dumped material.

“Since the establishment of PURE, the project has removed over 3,500 tonnes of illegal dumping from the landscape.

“A lo-call-phone-line 1850 365 121, operating 24 hours a day 365 days of the year, allows any member of the public to report incidents of illegal dumping, or, individuals who are responsible for such activities.

“The PURE Project has demonstrated the power of the community in addressing illegal dumping in the Dublin and Wicklow Mountains.

“The Council’s Litter Warden Service also patrols the rural and upland areas.”

Report illegal dumping at 1850 365 121 or visit Pure Project website to learn more.
