Relax and unwind at Céili at the Crossroads

THIS year’s Céilí at the Crossroads in Glenasmole will take place this Saturday, July 20, and promises to provide an opportunity “to relax and unwind and to enjoy each other’s company similarly to the way our predecessors did”.

A typical feature of the céilí is that people in attendance will dress up in vintage clothing in reference to the heritage of the event, which stemmed from the early 1900s.

The day will feature live music, set dancing, face painting, a burger van, awards will be given for the best dressed men, women and children who show up in vintage old-style clothing.

Myles Murphy from the Glenasmole Céilí Committee told The Echo: “If it’s not broken, why fix it?

“The céilí will run very similarly to previous years. Live music to start from local talent Jack Brett and Pull the Wool.

“[This will be] followed by set dancing under the guidance of Fear an Tí Jim Monaghan, which will include Jim’s famous brush dance – always a massive hit with young kids.

“The Pintmen ballad band will take to the stage at 10pm to entertain the crowd with all our favourite ballads, DJ Deco is on hand as master of ceremonies and to ensure the party and dancing continues until the wee hours.”

The céilí has become a highlight in the social calendar of Bohernbreena and the wider Tallaght area, as it is a high energy event that’s suitable for all the family.

“In an era where the cost of living has spiralled, it is great to be able to offer the community a free event to come to,” added Myles, “to relax and unwind and to enjoy each other’s company similarly to the way our predecessors did.

“In many respects, it’s a link to the past and a reminder that, although life was simpler then, they still enjoyed themselves.

“Life has gotten so busy these days with mobile phone contact taking precedence over a face-to-face chat.

“The céilí allows us to take a step back, to have that chat, and for neighbours to become neighbours again.”

The Céilí at the Crossroads will take place in Cunard. Glenasmole, this Saturday at 7pm.
