Residents ‘reclaim the pathways’

COMMUNITY spirit and teamwork have been demonstrated as residents’ band together to tidy up an overgrown green area and pathways in Firhouse.

Large groups of residents in Firhouse have been coming out to take part in regular tidy ups of the area and to “reclaim the pathways”.

One of the organisers of the tidy-ups, Firhouse resident Teresa Harford said she decided to take the step when she realised that she was not the only resident who felt that the area was in need of a small tidy up.

“Everybody was thinking what I was thinking, but nobody was saying it out loud,” says Teresa.

Speaking with The Echo, Teresa said that they are currently clearing the pathways in the area to make it easier for people with buggies, mobility scooters and wheelchairs and the elderly in the area to get by.

“The roads around the permitter of Firhouse itself and the roads through the estates that is what we are looking at clearing at the moment.

“It’s really the heart of the village, it’s our village because that is all we have and to bring it up to spec and to make it look like somewhere that people are happy to visit and pass through and admire and that is what we are after,” said Teresa.

“There is a bit of upgrading being done and if people wanted to volunteer, they are more than welcome. We are reclaiming our footpaths, which have seriously overgrown.

“We have been picking up green waste and edging the grass area back to where it belongs and tidying up around the trees to create a space.

“There are groups of trees on the green and they have all been cleared out and the area looks magnificent – when all the waste is gone it will be an area for people to sit and have a picnic and sit under the shade of the trees – that’s the intention,” Teresa said proudly.

The group meet up on Monday nights at 7pm and Saturday mornings at 10am at Killakee Green for one hour, but if volunteers wanted to stay longer to help it is up to them.

Volunteers are encouraged to bring any gardening equipment they can such as a spade, brush or an edger.
