Rhasidat secures third place in Diamond League

Rhasidat Adeleke finished her season with a third-place finish at the Diamond League event in Brussels after fellow competitor Salwa Eid Naser of Bahrain was disqualified for a lane infringement.

The Tallaght native clocked a time of 50.96, with Olympic Champion Marileidy Paulino taking first and the top prize money of $30,000 after an impressive late surge to clock in at 49.45 seconds.

United States athlete Alexis Holmes took second after finishing with a time of 50.32 seconds, just ahead of Naser who’s disqualification bumped Adeleke up to third place as she received $7,000 prize money for her finish.

The Diamond League event held at the weekend caps off a busy but successful 2024 season for the 22-year-old.

Highlights of her summer include two fourth place finishes at the Olympics of course, but also the European Championships in Rome where she achieved two silvers (400m and 4×400 women’s relay) and a gold mixed relay medal.

The Tallaght Athletics Club athlete broke Irish records over 60m, 200m and 300m indoors, and 100m and 400m outdoors throughout the year.

A podium finish in Brussels caps off a successful season for Adeleke, who will no doubt have her sights set on more success next year.
