Role model rapper Selló named St Patrick’s Day parade Grand Marshal
ONE of the fastest growing Irish artists of the last year, Selló has been announced as the Grand Marshal of the 2023 Clondalkin St Patrick’s Day Parade.
Selló is a past pupil of Moyle Park College and commonly features lyrics about Clondalkin in his music.
Independent councillor Francis Timmons, who is organising the parade, made the announcement this week.
“I am very proud to announce that the Grand Marshal for the Clondalkin St Patrick’s Day Parade 2023 is Clondalkin Gaelic drill rapper Selló,” Cllr Timmons said.
“Selló is a great and positive role model for young people.”
When he released his debut EP Sellótape last year, Selló recorded the video for his single ‘Dublin’ around Bawnogue and gives shout-outs to his hometown throughout the track.
Drill music has risen in popularity over the last decade. For the uninitiated, drill is a subgenre of hip hop that sounds like a mix between trap and rap.
What Selló has done over the last year is try establish a new sound native to Ireland, called Gaelic Drill, which combines traditional Irish and folk music samples with propulsive rap music.
Signed to Warner Music, Selló performed to a sold-out enraptured crowd in The Academy in December – his first headline show.
Recently, Selló was on the Late Late Show after being nominated in three categories, including Irish Artist of the Year, Breakthrough Artist and Song of the Year, at the RTÉ Choice Music Prize.
It was revealed that the theme of the parade will be Diversity – The United Colours of Clondalkin in a bid to make it “the most colourful and diverse parade yet”.
The Clondalkin St Patrick’s Day parade is due to start in Clondalkin Village at 2.30pm on Friday, March 17.
