Rovers raise 2020 Airtricity League trophy

By Stephen Leonard

IT WAS party time at Tallaght Stadium last night as Shamrock Rovers lifted the 2020 SSE Airtricity League trophy.

The club had been waiting nine years for this moment and it was very much lamentable they were unable to celebrate the occasion with, what would undoubtedly have been, a packed stadium had it not been for the fallout out from the Covid crises.

Shamrock Rovers celebrate winning the SSE Airtricity League title 2020

Stephen Bradley's men remain unbeaten in this year's campaign after they battled out a scoreless draw with a St Patrick's Athletic side desperate for three points in order to keep their hopes of clinching a European berth very much alive.

In truth they had plenty of chances to do just that given the openings they created particularly in the second half.

Indeed goalkeeper Alan Mannus had to be at his best to keep out Georgie Kelly’s powerful strike five minutes after the break.

And the Hoops shotstopper again came to the rescue of his side when denying Jordan Gibson who ran almost the length of the pitch after a Rovers corner kick had broken down.

The homeside were not without their chances and striker Aaron Greene was presented with the best of them in the 69th minute when he tore in to meet a tremendous ball in from substitute Danny Lafferty on the left, but he was unable to get the necessary purchase on his header to direct it home.

Rovers had also asked questions of the Pat’s defence in the opening half, Lee Grace seeing his snapshot closed down before Rhys Marshall curled his shot the wrong side of the far post after racing on to a sublime through ball from Aaron McEneff.

Still remaining unbeaten and lifting the title was what it was all about for Rovers tonight as the players and management team celebrated in front of what few supporters were able to attend tonight’s derby.
