RTE On This Day: The Dublin Housing crisis in 1972

On this day in 1972, as part of the RTE ‘7 Days’ programme, the housing crisis in Dublin was featured, with a couple living in Inchicore speaking to Bill O’Herlihy.

The similarities with today’s ongoing issues around housing in the capital are stark, with a lack of rent control and the ever-growing housing list just some of the same problems renters face today.

At the time of filming there were 5,000 people on the Dublin Corporation housing list, and those who were lucky (we use that term lightly) enough to find a place to live were often living in cramped, damp and vermin infested properties.

Interviewees in the piece speak about the competition for rented accommodation, with some having visited several properties, along with many of others looking for somewhere to live.
