ST MICHAEL’S National School in Ballyfermot was awarded the Blue Star Programme Flag for their work around increasing the knowledge of the European parliament and EU among students.

On Tuesday, EU MEP Frances Fitzgerald and South Dublin County Council Mayor Vicki Casserly attended the school to help raise the flag and celebrate the achievement.

Jenny Ní Dhoibhilín, a teacher in St Michael’s, said fourth class students took part in the programme this year, conducting research on the EU, EU citizenship, along with the creation of an EU related exhibition.

She said students thanked MEP Frances Fitzgerald and Mayor Vicki Casserly for attending the ceremony, and for taking part in a Q&A session in April as part of their project.

Some students played the anthem of the European Union ‘Ode To Joy’ on the tin whistle.

Students took on different projects. Ms Ní Dhoibhilín’s class focused on Ireland and Germany, Ms Kelly’s class researched Italy and Ms McKiernan’s class studied France.

Project work included mountains, rivers, famous landmarks, different artists and musicians, as well as native animals, important historic events, food and culture.

“We also researched all about politics – how it works in Ireland and in the EU,” said Ms Ní Dhoibhilín.

“We looked at decisions made locally and this tied in with the local elections in May as well as the European Parliament and decisions that are made globally.

“We also had our very own EU passports and learned about the national language, currency and flag of each country in the EU.

“On May 9, we celebrated Europe Day. We invited parents and local politicians to the hall to show off all of our work. As a whole school we took part in the handshake for Europe.”
