‘Sensitivities’ around Lucan pool to be discussed at meeting

A MEETING is to be held on Friday (July 12) at Lucan swimming pool between local councillors and South Dublin County Council.

The still unfinished pool, estimated to cost approximately €13.6m, has been a long running saga in Lucan.

Construction began in 2019 with various dates of completion coming and going.

Lucan councillors were invited to a tour on site in January but were not allowed to take photographs.

Former Cllr Derren Ó Brádaigh (SF) was critical of the delays following the site visit, telling The Echo at the time that “considerable” works were still required.

Ó Brádaigh cited the moveable floor for the pool and foul connections as key objectives.

At the council meeting on Monday, Cllr Paul Gogarty (Ind) said they were told on the January site visit that the pool “would be completed in July.”

Gogarty asked council chief executive Colm Ward for an “estimated date” they could give to residents for the opening of the new pool, which is to be managed by Aura Leisure.

“Also, if we could be permitted to take proper notes or voice recordings at the next tour because we weren’t allowed to take photographs for security reasons, we weren’t allowed to get any indication about the progress that we could then refer back to [residents],” said Gogarty.

This was echoed at the meeting by Cllr Liona O’Toole (Ind) who said the prohibition of photos the last time “didn’t go down well.”

Cllr Caroline Brady (FG) said the council indicated in their briefing that there was an issue with the contractor and requested a date for completion.

“If not, will there will be a back-up plan B, or is there something that you can share with us on that?,” asked Brady.

Responding to the queries, SDCC chief executive Colm Ward said there was “sensitivities” around the project and he would “much rather discuss them with councillors on site on Friday.”

“We would have hoped to have had the facility finished by now. Obviously there is reasons that it has not transpired.”

Mr Ward said he would go into further detail with councillors on Friday around the allocation of works for contractors and arrange for photos and “what information should be shared.”
