Sensory garden preparation works start in Griffeen Park

A SENSORY garden in Griffeen Valley Park is being progressed by South Dublin County Council, with preparation works due to be completed in the coming weeks, reports Aimee Walsh.

The development and design of a sensory garden in the park was agreed by the council back in 2019 and works commenced in 2020. The preparation works consisted of the removal of dead and dangerous trees on the site.

The sensory garden will provide universal accessibility with equipment and enjoyable features for everyone of all needs to enjoy. The gardens usually contain features accessible to the disabled individual such as scented and edible plants, sculptures, water features designed to make sound, textured touchpads, magnifying-glass screens, braille and audio induction loop descriptions.

The sensory garden will be in the wooded area of the park on the north side of the River Griffeen near King John’s Bridge and will make use of the natural woodland area.

The construction of the  meandering footpath through the woodland is currently underway and is expected to be complete in the coming weeks. The path will link up with the pedestrian and vehicle entrance on Griffeen Road and will wind up through the woodland leading out towards King John’s  Bridge, giving users of the new route a closer view of the River Griffeen.
