Seven local parks awarded Green Flags

NO LESS than seven local parks have been recognised as being of good quality and having been managed in environmentally sustainable ways after being awarded a 2023 Green Flag.

An Taisce Environmental Education has awarded Ireland’s best managed public parks and green spaces with prestigious Green Flags.

Under the management of South Dublin County Council, five parks have been given a Green Flag.

These include Tymon Park, Corkagh Park, Rathfarnham Castle Park, Sean Walsh Park and Waterstown Park, which all hold on to their respective flags.

Also, Tymon Park has named as being highly commended in the 2023 Pollinator Plan Award category with long-flowering and short-flowering meadows, the urban planting and bulb schemes in the park.

Meanwhile, under the management of the Dublin City Council, two parks have been recognised with a Green Flag for the quality of the amenity.

These include Eamonn Ceannt Park in Crumlin and the People’s Park in Ballyfermot, which obtains the flag in the first round of the Green Flag Awards since opening to the public in June 2022.

Nationwide, some 101 parks, gardens, grounds, and wildlife sanctuaries around the country have been included in the 2023 Green Flag Awards.

Now operating in 17 countries across the world, the Green Flag Award is the international quality benchmark for the public green space sector.

The An Taisce Environmental Education Unit run the award, which is running over 25 years and assessed across eight criteria headings, in Ireland.

“The continued success of the Green Flag Award is due to the love staff members have for their green spaces and the hard work they put in to maintaining them,” Minister for Heritage, Malcolm Noonan TD, said.

“They do a phenomenal job every day making their parks and gardens beautiful, safe spaces for the public to enjoy.”
