Sexton to captain Ireland in Six Nations

ST MARY’S College RFC and Leinster fly half Jonathan Sexton has been named captain of Ireland for the 2020 Six Nations Championship.

The 34-year-old made his first start as captain for his country at last year’s Rugby World Cup in Japan when they faced Russia and is relishing the prospect of leading the team again.

“It’s a massive honour to be asked to do it and I obviously got a taste for it during the World Cup for that one game and I’ve done it in patches with Ireland in-game when either Rory or Pete have gone off in previous games” he told IrishRugby.ie

“It’s something that I enjoy, but ultimately it’s a huge honour, the biggest honour of my career to be asked to do it and I’m really looking forward to it and looking forward to the challenges that are coming up and hopefully we can have a successful Six Nations now.”

Another of the St Mary’s crew, Caelan Doris is one of five uncapped players to be named in Andy Farrell’s 35-man squad for the Six Nations.

Joining him in the forwards is Jack McGrath while Jordan Larmour will be hoping to add to the 21 caps he has already chalked up.

Ireland will ignite their championship campaign against Scotland at the Aviva Stadium on Saturday, February 1 before also welcoming Wales a week later.
