Life is a Cycle: Sinead Kennedy book to launch on International Women’s Day

A  LIFE of adventure via solo travel and cycling is the central focus of a new book by Tallaght woman Sinead Kennedy – which will be launched in the Cycle Superstore on Airton Road this week.

Titled ‘Life Is a Cycle – A true story of cycling adventures and solo travel’, the book will be launched on International Women’s Day this Wednesday, March 8, at 6.30pm and all are welcome to attend.

Sinead, who grew up in Kiltipper and now lives in Rathfarnham, wrote the book to catalogue her experience of going against social conformity and the gruelling cycling challenges she has done.

“I’m nothing special in that I am not a racer or that young, in fact I am almost 50 and just your average Saturday cyclist,” said Sinead.

“However, that hasn’t stopped me from cycling parts of the Tour de France and Mont Ventoux three times in one day.

“I cycled Death Road in Bolivia, and a lot of the Giro d’Italia routes too.

“I also took eight hours to cycle the Alto de Letras in Colombia while sick as a dog and to add to the list, during lockdown I was so down in the dumps I took my bike to Spain and cycled from the north coast to the south coast with just one change of clothes.”

The skilled cyclist has deftly combined her passions – cycling and travelling – and is looking forward to sharing her stories with the release of her book.

Sinead, who said she has gone against the grain by not getting married or having children, also wants to inspire other women to explore the world and see the sights, and not feel held back by their circumstances.

“I have travelled solo to six continents and am just waiting to go to Antarctica – it’s rather expensive!” Sinead quipped.

“All my adventures are detailed in the book. They weren’t all easy and at times I had to overcome sickness, pain and tears but somehow, I always got there in the end.

“There are also some very funny stories about mishaps and surprises I have encountered along the way!”
