Sinn Fein review party activity in Dublin South West

By Aideen O'Flaherty

SINN Féin is to carry out a review of political actions in the entire Dublin South West area following the decision to nominate councillor for Tallaght South and former MMA fighter Paddy Holohan for the position of Mayor of South Dublin County Council last month.

The party’s councillors in Dublin South West have also been instructed to stop all meetings and political activity, pending a full review of the area.

Cllr Paddy Holohan

Cllr Holohan was suspended from Sinn Féin for five months last January for comments he made on his No Shame podcast, including claiming that Ireland should be run by “a family man” and that Leo Varadkar was “separated” from the history of the country because of his Indian heritage.

The former MMA fighter posted an apology on social media at the time and said his comments were “misinterpreted”.

A spokesperson for Sinn Féin confirmed to Echo.ie that party activity has been suspended in the area, stating: “Party structures in the area are suspended and there will be no meetings of any section of the party in the area i.e. Cumann, Comhairle Ceantair or Council Group meetings, pending a full review of the area.

“This follows some recent political actions taken by some members in the constituency which the Ard Chomhairle views with deep concern.”
