TWO Citywest schoolgirls walked and ran 100km each over the course of 29 days – and raised over €1,000 for the Jack and Jill Children’s Foundation in the process.

Sisters Abbie (8) and Lauren (11) McGovern began their challenge last month, as they’re both passionate about exercise and wanted to raise money for a good cause, and they successfully completed the challenge in mid-June.

Their mother, Rosie McGovern, told The Echo: “Initially, they just started running and walking a lot when the lockdown started.

“Lauren suggested raising money for charity, and the girls picked the Jack and Jill Foundation because they knew the money would go to children.

“We looked it up and we saw, for example, that €16 would cover one hour of home nursing care for a child, so the girls knew that every kilometre and every penny would count.”

The girls, who attend Citywest and Saggart Community National School, laced up their running shoes most days during the 29-day period of their challenge, and they alternated between walking and running in order to reach their 100km targets.

“When they saw that they had reached 100kms, they were ecstatic,” said Rosie. “They were thrilled, it’s a great accomplishment for them.”

Family, friends, and members of the Citywest and Saggart CNS community supported the girls’ endeavour by donating to the Jack and Jill Foundation in recognition of their achievement, and a total of €1,158 was raised.

“Myself and my husband, Paul, are super proud of them,” added Rosie. “It wasn’t an easy task for them to take on.

“I’ve thanked every single person who donated individually on Facebook, for their support and their kindness.”
