Six-year-old racer catches eye of Formula One engineer
ELIJAH Hartzenberg has had an excellent rookie season in the Motorsport Ireland National Karting Championship.
A pupil of St. Martin De Porres, Hartzenberg finished fifth overall in the Motorsport Ireland National Karting Championship, competing against more experienced drivers and went on to achieve sixth place at European Championship level.
He has since moved into the IAME Bambino class and made an outstanding debut in the winter championship, taking the overall victory.
After being caught up in an incident in his opening heat and dropping down to 14th he fought his way back to ninth, won his second heat from seventh on the grid and then went on to win the final after starting fifth.
Perhaps most notably, Elijah has been selected for driver development by Austin O’Brien, a Race / Performance Engineer with the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team.
Austin’s professional motorsport background spans 10 World Championships across junior racing categories, Formula 1 and the World Rally Championship. For a driver of Elijah’s age to have the opportunity to develop under the guidance of someone with this level of experience is a particularly exciting milestone in his young career. Elijah is the only driver from Ireland selected for this development opportunity.
His progress has also attracted recognition from IAME Ireland and Irish racing driver Alex Dunne, with attention drawn to the significance of the winter championship pathway, which Alex himself followed in his early karting career on his journey towards single-seater racing.
Behind these results is a six-year-old who is learning his craft, developing his racecraft and competing against drivers with considerably more experience. His move into a new class, followed immediately by a championship debut victory, marks another exciting chapter in his progress.
